Welcome to the e-learning on gender, sexual, and sex diversity! Before we start learning, we would like to share some disclaimers you should keep in mind.
Context and Cultural Sensitivity
Words and views about sexuality and gender depend on context and culture. This means that the terms discussed here may not be known or used in other parts of the world. Conversely, we may not always be aware of terms that are widely known elsewhere. It’s important to note that this e-learning has been developed by an organization in Belgium, where Dutch is one of the official languages.
Awareness of this context and cultural sensitivity is particularly relevant in asylum reception. Later in this e-learning, we will briefly touch upon other perspectives on sexuality and gender.
Self-identification
There are many different terms to describe your sexual and gender identity. Some people consciously choose not to use a label, while others opt for a very specific one.
Everyone decides for themselves if and which label they use. We always base our understanding on self-identification.
