Norms also play a role when we talk about sex, gender, and sexual diversity. This is mainly about gender norms and the hetero- and cisgender norms. In this chapter, we’ll focus on gender norms. The hetero- and cisgender norms will be discussed briefly in chapter 1.4.
Gender
Have you ever thought about what it means to be a man or a woman? Many people don’t think about this. Yet, daily, consciously or unconsciously, we encounter expectations tied to our sex. These expectations are what we call ‘gender’. There are general beliefs about how a man/woman thinks, behaves, and feels.
Gender norms
Gender norms are the rules and expectations that dictate how people should behave based on their gender, such as what is considered typically masculine or feminine. These norms are taught by our surroundings, media, schools…This often happens in subtle ways and from an early age. Watch this video for an example!
These rules and expectations significantly influence our lives. They dictate not just the toys we can play with but also shoes, clothing, colours, hobbies, education choices, language, work, etc.
Additionally, when someone doesn’t meet these expectations, it can lead to strange looks or negative reactions. And that while diversity and stepping outside the norm can be very beautiful!
